It’d been a full day at the coffee shop, something that was grating on everybody involved. Sarai had been cheerful at the beginning of the day, but by 6 o’clock, her nerves were wearing thin. I couldn’t blame her. Although Theo had dropped by, she hadn’t been able to get in touch with Ethan, either. We knew nothing.

“I can help,” Sarai said, picking up one plate.

“Thank you,” I said. I watched as a plate tilted itself out of her grasp, knocking to the ground. I would have sworn it cracked, but by the time her fingers touched it to pick it up it was whole as if nothing had happened.

Sarai scowled at it, but didn’t seem angrier. But I could see what it was, and it made me nervous. Her magic was leaking.

I could see Wren watching now, her attention as focused as mine. “You weren’t kidding,” she said, her voice soft.

“Trust me,” I said. “I wish I had been.”

She made a sympathetic noise. “Here,” Wren said. “Can I help you?”

Sarai gave her a suspicious look, but then she nodded. “That happens a lot,” she said matter-of-factly.

I glanced at Wren, who glanced back at Sarai. “It happens to all of us,” Wren said.

I was about to say something else, when the door pushed open. “Time to go home,” Miles said, and he looked—and sounded—tired.

Still, Sarai threw herself at him, and he picked her up easily, holding her close. It wasn’t just exhaustion; it was something else, too.

Miles didn’t look at me, his eyes closed. Whatever had happened was bad. Even Sarai could tell, because she didn’t start her usual banter. Then the door pushed open again.

“We’re having a meeting at the main house,” Ethan said.

Then he was back out the door, leaving me standing there with Wren. I would’ve put money on it having to do with the case, although I couldn’t have told you what in particular.

“We’re heading home,” Miles said, nodding. His face was pale, but he had put Sarai down and gave me a wan smile. “Thanks.”

I smiled back but was sidetracked. Sarai was making googly eyes. I gave her a hard look, but she grinned in return. She really wasn’t afraid of anything.

“It’s a good thing you’re cute,” I told her.

She giggled. Miles gave me a quizzical look, but I ignored him.

“Later,” Miles said, heading out the door.

He didn’t look back. Sarai was right behind him, her hand around his arm, leaning close. I wondered exactly how much they’d gotten to spend time together when he was a homicide detective. I had a feeling this was better, but I wasn’t sure by how much.

“I’ll drive,” Wren said, not waiting for an answer as she headed towards the door. Scrambling, I barely grabbed my purse, magically locking the door instead of actually locking it. I didn’t have time to reach for the keys as fast as she was moving.

But if it had to do with the case, like we suspected, she definitely had a reason to be moving fast.
